Thiruvananthapuram: Due to lack of facilities for clinical training at the Idukki Medical College Hospital (MCH), its second year students will be shifted to other medical colleges in the state.
The director of medical education (DME) has written to the state government seeking permission in this regard, following which it was decided to shift 49 of 50 students who have passed first and second semesters (first year) to other colleges.
Eighteen students will go to Thiruvananthapuram MCH while six will be accommodated at Alappuzha college. Eight students will be shifted to Kottayam MCH and ten to Kozhikode MCH. Remaining seven students will attend second year classes at Thrissur medical college.
After completing the second year, the students will resume their studies at Idukki medical college.
"We plan to shift the students as they have completed the first year. A proposal in this regard was submitted to the state government," said DME, Dr Ramla Beevi. The DME has reported severe shortage of faculty and facilities including operation theatres, wards and labs. College authorities had first proposed the idea to shift the students, following which they requested the DME.
As per the curriculum, second-year MBBS students have to undergo clinical training in orthopaedics, dermatology, respiratory medicine, psychiatry, ophthalmology, ENT, casualty, clinical pathology and community medicine.
The Idukki medical college, started during the previous UDF rule in 2014, is reeling under infrastructure crunch. It is one of those colleges established under the ambitious project of the government to construct medical college hospitals in all districts
